In early India,games and sports were very much concerned about the develop - ment of physique and for the art of offence and defence. In early india people use to play marbles, dice. Swimming and hunting are two important games which were earlier played."Gullidanda" was also one of the games played and it involves one long and one short stick. Games like, Chess, Snakes and Ladders, Playing Cards, Polo, the martial arts of Judo and Karate had originated in India and it was from here that these games were transmitted to foreign countries, where they were further developed. It is more than likely that many of today's Olympic disciplines are sophisticated versions of the games of strength and speed that flourished in ancient India and Greece.

Hockey:

Hockey, in which India has an impressive record with eight Olympic gold medals, is officially the national sport.The Golden Era of hockey in India was the period from 1928 - 1956 when India won 6 consecutive gold medals in the Olympics. During the Golden Era, India played 24 Olympic matches, won all 24.

Cricket:

Cricket was brought to the Indian sub-continent by the British.India achived its first 'Cup' victory in international cricket in 1983 when it won the Prudential World cup beating West Indies by 43 runs at Lord's under the captaincy of Kapil Dev.In terms of number of spectators, cricket ranks second only to football (soccer) as the most popular sport in the world.

FootBall:

Football talent exists in India but the majority of them are untapped due to a lack of grass-root coaching programs throughout the country.Calcutta a city situated in the eastern side of India is the major center for football in India. Top Indian clubs are situated there and the local state association came into existence in the year 1893 before the formation of All India Football Federation in 1937. The local state association is called the Indian Football Association, which controls football in one state, Bengal.

Golf:

India is the first country outside Britain to adopt the game of Golf. Playing golf in India is an interesting experience due to the diversity of its golf courses. If you have not played Golf in India, you have been missing out on a wonderful sport. The Royal Calcutta Golf Club, established in 1829, is the oldest golf club in India.



Tennis:

tennisTennis in its present form was conceived in England in the 1870s. In the 1880s the British Army and Civilian Officers brought the game to India. Lawn Tennis is a game played indoors or outdoors on a rectangular court by two persons (in singles) or by four persons (doubles). The players use rackets to strike a ball back and forth across a net. The object is to score points by hitting the ball out of the opponents reach or in such a way that he cannot return it successfully. Some of the famous Indian Tennis players are: Leander peas,SaniaMirza,VijayAmritraj,RameshKrishnan,Mahesh Bhupathi. Other popular games are basketball, volleyball and badminton
