It means "sharing of information over a distance". There are so many ways of tele - communi- -cations like: Telephones, E-mails, chatting, Video - conferenc - ing, etc...India's telephone system, like many other aspects of telecommunications,is in the government sector, under the control of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. landline phone The modernization of the telephone system in India has been underway since 1986 when Mahanagar Telephone Nigam, a government corporation, was established to operate systems in Bombay and New Delhi, and Videsh Sanchar Nigam, also government owned, was set up as the overseas carrier. The number of telephone connections in India rose from 800,000 in FY 1968 to 8 million in FY 1994. The private sector and foreign companies have also entered into this sector, both as direct investors and exporters of equipment and technology. There also are submarine telecommunications cables linking India with Malaysia and the United Arab Emirates. Although the government is a major manufacturer of telephone equipment, the private sector--especially foreign ventures--is becoming increasingly involved in manufacturing in the mid-1990s and paging, cellular phone service, and electronic mail are being introduced. Three to four leading private players are likely to emerge as competition to the incumbents, BSNL and MTNL, which have a significant presence across the value chain. The Tata Group, Reliance Infocom and Bharti Televentures have announced plans to emerge as integrated telecom companies offering end-to-end services to customers. Hutchison, on the other hand, appears to be focused on cellular services, with no stated intention of entering other businesses. nokia mobile handset The telecom sector has witnessed the presence of many leading foreign companies including US companies: AT&T, Motorola, Nynex, US West, Hughes, Harris, Qualcomm, Sprint, Telstra, NTT, Singapore Telecom, Philippine Telecom, Bezeq, Siemens, Ericsson, Nokia, Fujitsu, Alcatel, and Bell Canada among others. India happens to be one of the fastest growing mobile markets in the world and is adding around 4-5 million new customers every month. India is now on the fifth spot in terms of mobile users in the world. However, considering the population of the country is more than billion, it still provides a huge market for companies to sell their products.

»Nokia calls India its stepping stone to success. The mobile tariffs in India are some of the lowest in the world and this has further fueled the demand for mobile phones in the market.
