Amritsar is a key city in North India. It belongs to the state of Punjab and boasts of a strategic location. The city derives its name from the holy lake which is present inside the Harmander Sahib. “Amrit” means nector and “sar” means lake.Apart from the beautiful city it has many Sikh temples and tourist attractions which draw a large crowd towards it every year.Although there are many Sikh shrines in and around Amritsar, Golden Temple is the biggest one. This is a holy shrine which houses the holy script of Guru Granth Sahib. It draws its name from the gold-laden dome upon a marble base. The holy pool which lies inside the premises of this Gurdwara makes a very magnificent sight at the sunset. The sweet enchanting of Guruvani wafting from the shrine wraps the entire atmosphere into its spiritual fold. Amritsar identifies itself with Golden temple. It is also the nerve center of Sikhism.
Memories of bloodstains and the turbulent days have faded away. Today the city again bustles with activities and life. The cobbled streets are again full with the local fervor.There are various scrumptious delicacies that are very popular. Amritsari’s are popular for their Khana and pahanawa (food and dress).The presence of great hotels caters to the need of tourists. Amritsar is famous for its hot and spicy cuisines. The Amrisari aloo, Kulcha and lassi are among the top of the menu.
Amritsar is also famous for Jalianwala Bag massacre. In 1919, the British police forces have randomly fired at the people who were holding a peaceful assembly in demand of freedom. Many innocent people including women and children were killed in this massacre. A monument is built on this place in the memory of people who were killed. The bullet marks on the boundary walls bring alive the agonizing tale of cruelty of the British rule.
Another major attraction is Amritsar is not a monument but a daily event. After a little distance away from this city India shares its boundary with Pakistan. A fantastic spectacle is presented every evening when guards of both country change by a handshaking.
This place is known as a Wagah border. The sounds of cheerful slogans lift up in the air with lots of crowd witnessing this regular event every evening. Amritsar is also popular for the cloths. There are various small and big shops in Amritsar which sell lots of cloths. There are various ethnic or traditional wears apart from the modern outfits. The popularity of embroidered clothes is great.
Another destination which lies 22 km south of Amritsar is Taran Taran. It was built in honor of Guru Ram Das. It is also a very important shrine. Its architecture is largely inspired from the Golden temple. There is Holy River inside this shrine. There is a popular belief that a bathe in this sarovar can treat leprosy. Communication and tourist services are quite convenient.This city has an airport, which has been upgraded to an international one recently. Majority of the public and private airlines operates regularly to and from Amritsar to all major cities.The city is also well connected by road to all major cities of North India. It is considered as the base for exploring further northern India by road.City has very well developed railway station where number of trains run daily. Amritsar is connected to Lahore by rail.
